Our college tour to the University of Connecticut in Storrs (UConn) several years ago turned into a yummy story destination and we are still raving about it. Our visit to the beautiful UConn Storks campus has been long overdue. We were glad to have a personal trustworthy guide in our niece which made our college tour to UConn the more special.
Late in 1880, brothers Charles and Augustus Storrs donated land and money to start an agricultural school in Connecticut. Our College Tour to the University of Connecticut in Storrs started with us enjoying the gorgeous outdoors with the vibrant Fall foliage in amazing display. Our happy place is being together enjoying fun time outdoors.
Next was a wonderful walk to Storrs Center, located just steps from the University of Connecticut. Storrs Center is a vibrant Town Square with inviting cafés and restaurants and plenty of places to shop, like the Insomniac Cookies and the inspiring story behind it. Insomnia Cookies was born out of the dislike of heavy meals late at night, love of food delivery, and the realization that by the time you get hungry at night, nothing is open. The concept was founded by Seth Berkowitz in 2003 from his dorm room while attending the University of Pennsylvania. Berkowitz started baking and delivering warm cookies to students late-night on campus… and Insomnia Cookies was born.
We stopped at our favorite store Barnes and Noble for some reading inspiration. Then it was time for dinner and there were so many yummy choices. Dog Lane Cafe offers casual American eats while next door Mooyah Burgers offers a variety of burgers out of this world. We run into Geno’s Grille and Love Art Sushi to our oldest daughter’s sushi lover’s delight.
Our restaurant of choice was Kathmandu Kitchen, a Nepalese and Indian restaurant in the heart of Storrs Center. Kathmandu Kitchen serves a wide selection of authentic Nepalese and Indian Restaurant dishes prepared in homemade style with their own special recipes. Each dish is prepared from the freshest ingredients available. They strive to prepare a menu including healthful regional cuisine and familiar American fare. Kathmandu Kitchen serves a diverse menu of Vegetarian foods along with Vegan menu options available.
We couldn’t wait to start our Yummy Story Destination at Kathmandu Kitchen and ordered a delicious Crab appetizer from their Daily Special menu. Hubby’s choice was Lamb Saag, a Lamb dish cooked with delicately spiced spinach gravy finished with cream. I opted for the Kathmandu Kitchen Biryani with Basmati Rice cooked with chicken, lamb and shrimp in the Chef’s special recipe.
Our niece ordered Chicken Curry with Boneless chicken and fresh spices cooked in homemade sauce while our oldest was eager to explore their Chicken Kebabs which were part of the Daily Special menu. Our middle felt adventurous with Chicken Tikka, boneless chicken pieces marinated in yogurt and specially blended with Himalayan spices.
We couldn’t finish our college tour to the University of Connecticut in Storrs without our traditional Saturday treat. Our niece recommended the UConn Dairy Bar and we couldn’t wait to explore the creamery with its more than 24 flavors in a cone, milkshake, cup, float, sundae and more.
The UConn Dairy Bar opened in 1953 to sell dairy products that were made by the Creamery. The Creamery was established in the early 1900s and bottled milk all the way up until 1991. Today, the Creamery makes ice cream according to its original recipe and sells this ice cream through the Dairy Bar retail establishment, along with a variety of cheeses.
The girls enjoyed Oreo ice cream with hot fudge. Our niece ordered a seasonal special. Hubby went for coconut while I enjoyed my maple walnut since they didn’t have any rum raisin.
Our College Tour to the University of Connecticut in Storrs was such a win that we cannot wait to come back and explore some more. We loved the fact that our girls might consider being Huskies and we would not mind it a bit because we loved every moment on our College Tour to the University of Connecticut in Storrs.
