Our family adventures to Madison CT was the perfect day trip to explore the outdoors and enjoy all that Madison has to offer. Madison, according to Wikipedia, is a town in the southeastern corner of New Haven County, occupying a central location on Connecticut’s Long Island Sound shoreline. This area, formerly part of Guilford and known as East Guilford, was first settled about 1650 on land bought from the Nehantic and Mohegan Indians in 1641. With population increasing, settlers here sought separate parishes and the Society of East Guilford was incorporated in 1707, the Society in North Madison, called North Bristol, in 1753.
The Town of Madison, named for President James Madison, was incorporated in 1826. This was once a center for fishing, shipping, shipbuilding, farming, and crayon manufacturing. Famous people born here included Thomas Chittenden, first Governor of Vermont,; philanthropist Daniel Hand; artist Gilbert Munger; and chief sponsor of the Civil War ironclad warship Monitor Cornelius Scranton Bushnell.
Our family adventures to Madison CT was out of curiosity to Hammonasset Beach State Park which is Connecticut’s largest shoreline park offers over 2 miles of beach to enjoy swimming, strolling along the boardwalk, or just relaxing in the sun and surf. The day we visited was so windy that it was definitely not the relaxing in the sun and surf we envisioned.
We plan to go in the summer because 2 miles of beach are worth another trip. It was around lunch time so we decided to stop at RJ Julia Booksellers for some lunch and of course book lovers that we are ended up spending most of the afternoon browsing the shop. Located in the shoreline town of Madison, Connecticut, RJ Julia Booksellers has always been a place of inspiration, information, and excitement.
RJ Julia opened 30 years ago as an independent bookstore whose mission was, and is, to be a place where words matter, where writer meets reader, where the ambiance and selection and merchandising of books creates an atmosphere that is welcoming and presents the opportunity for discovery.
They have won several major awards nationally, statewide, locally, and hosts over 300 events each year. Authors from all over the country — some even from overseas — visit the store to inspire, educate, and entertain. Their cafe and bistro offers delicious selections from salads, sandwiches and coffee.
Our family adventures to Madison CT was exactly what we needed on a weekend to remind us why we love New England. We took a quick walk after the bookstore and the gorgeous sky display was breathtaking. The drive home was quiet as we each bought a book, except Hubby, who decided that he just wanted to treat his favorite girls!
