Our Kayaking adventure at Hudson River Park is one adventure our family is thankful to have experienced together many years ago. We happen to walk at Pier 96 one Saturday afternoon visiting New York City and came across FREE kayaking by Manhattan Community Boathouse.
Manhattan Community Boathouse is a nonprofit organization that provides free kayaking at Pier 96 Boathouse at W 55 St. They offer free kayaking on first-come, first-served basis. They cannot accept reservations and there is no pre-registration required. Paddling with them is suitable for people of all ages and athletic abilities, and they ask everyone to limit their time on the water to 20 minutes if there are others waiting for a turn.
Our Kayaking adventure at Hudson River Park started with us receiving the safety instructions prior to getting in the boats. They have lockers for any items you would like to keep dry, and changing rooms at Pier 96 so make sure to dress accordingly because you could get wet in the boat. Since we had not planned our Kayaking adventure at Hudson River Park, we took the chance.
Each summer free classes in paddling skills and safety techniques are offered. These classes have been developed with beginners in mind, but are appropriate for kayakers of all skill levels. Each session includes instruction on the pier followed by practice time on the water. Classes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations or pre-registration.

Our Kayaking adventure at Hudson River Park left us realizing that indeed the best things in life are the people you love, the places you’ve been and the memories you’ve made along the way. The experience was priceless and we wholeheartedly encourage families to experience for themselves, especially now that school is over!
