Wooster Square Cherry Blossom festival 2024 is how we spent our Sunday afternoon with thousand of other families enjoying Spring burst of cherry blossoms. Wooster Square’s cherry blossoms have been celebrated each spring since 1973, when 72 Yoshino Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees were planted by the New Haven Historic Commission in collaboration with the New Haven Parks Department and Wooster Square neighborhood residents.
We have been looking forward to attend a Cherry Blossom festival since we attended our first one many years ago when we visited my best friend in Maryland. We couldn’t wait to go back again but life has been happening and we haven’t gotten the chance yet.
I asked our middle daughter to research Cherry Blossom festival near Connecticut and Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 came up. We were beyond thrilled to know that we can attend one in our “backyard” and it was a wonderful way to end our girls’ Spring break.
Parking was a bit of a challenge but we managed to find a great spot and walked to Wooster Square. We happily spread our blanket and set the chairs while listening to St Luke’s Steel Band, a dedicated group of steel band players of all ages, many who hail from the West Indies.
We then made our way to line of food vendors which include: Bake Bake Hooray, Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ, Bella Sera Mobile Cucina, Ben & Jerry’s, Cast Iron Chef Chophouse and Oyster Bar, Colossal Kielbasa, Crispy Melty, Cultured Cafe, Holy Guacamole, Jack’s Hotdogs, Jitter Bus, La Carreta, Lalibela Ethiopian Cuisine, Lucky Dog, Many Donuts, Mitai, New Haven Pizza Truck, Olmo, Soulfully Vegan, Swagat, Szabo’s Seafood, The Kettle King, The Mason Jar Exchange and the Royal Grill.
It was so hard to make a choice but our girls went with East Coast Pizza while Hubby and I opted for Mitai, a fantastic Caribbean food truck with delicious Curry goat/Oxtail meal with Jollof Rice and Sweet Plantains. The food was authentically delicious and when you add Sorrel Lemonade on this gorgeous Spring day, you feel yourself transported to the Caribbean.
We lounged on the blanket listening to Airbone Jazz and enjoying the crowd around us. When it was time for dessert, Ben & Jerry’s along with Many Donuts were a hit with us. We danced off the sugar to the sound of Carlos y Su Momento, a band with a trademark sound of Cool Jazz Island Music, Caribbean, Latin and Summer music.
Wooster Square Cherry Blossom festival 2024 was a true celebration of the magnificent trees in Wooster Square Park along with the people, the food, the music and the fun activities for the kids. The cherry trees have become a signature landmark in Wooster Square and New Haven and we are so glad we could be part of the 51st year of celebrating all that Spring brings to Connecticut.
