- Prayer: Prayer, according to Stormie Omartian in her empowering book The Power of a Praying Parent, is seeking God’s presence and releasing God’s power which gives us parents the means to overcome any parenting situation. Fighting on our knees for our children is coming alongside them and arming us and them with the whole armor to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the enemy.
- Petition: There is something about perseverance that results in staying the course no matter how difficult the situation is because the outcome is worth standing firm for. Parenting is not an event but a process that requires us to be stubborn with a purpose when it comes to our children. Our children are worth fighting for and the win will only come when we do not give up but petition God over and over on their behalf.
- Thanksgiving: It’s definitely difficult to be thankful when the going gets tough but from what I understand thanksgiving is not about what we see but who we know is on our side. It’s been said that if there is a Goliath in front of you, that means that there’s a David in you. The David in you doesn’t focus on Goliath’s size but on God’s size and might. When you know who goes before you in the parenting battle, you can’t help but be thankful because you know the situation does not stand a chance. It’s confusing to the enemy when we offer praise and thanksgiving in hard times but that’s what makes us different from other faiths. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure, and that hope in the midst of tough times makes us keep the faith in thanksgiving. It makes no sense at the moment but it makes all the difference in the long run.
When we have done our part with the 3 Essentials of Christian parenting in today’s culture, the result is the peace of God that surpasses all understanding to guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. A praying, perseverant and thankful parent is surely a powerful parent because such parent knows the keys to unlock peace not panic in the midst of a parenting storm.
My prayer is for all of us parents to know that we are equipped, qualified and not alone in the parenting journey. God wants us to start where we are, use what we have in our parenting box, and do what we can understanding that the effective, fervent prayer of a Christian parent avails much. We are in this together and God got us so let’s not grow weary in fighting for our children because they need us and they are worth it!
