STEM Fun Ice Experiment

STEM Fun Ice ExperimentSTEM Fun Ice Experiment is what a few days at home with a recovering preschooler calls for. Babygirl was fighting an ear infection a few weeks ago and we had her stay home until she felt 100% better. She was sleeping a lot the first few days because of the pain and medication but once she started feeling better, we made the best out the day with a fun learn science experiment.

Not all water is liquid and so we used this activity from one of our favorite educational websites to develop observation and writing skills while learning about the different forms that water can take. STEM Fun Ice Experiment spanned over two days and it taught Babygirl how to be patient in the process.

STEM Fun Ice ExperimentSTEM fun ice experiment required us first to make some colored ice by freezing some water, colored with a drop or two of food coloring. Babygirl chose 4 colors: blue, green, yellow and pink. We decided to leave it to freeze until the next day once she comes back from school. I had to stop her a couple of times from opening it every 10 minutes because she was so excited and could hardly wait.

The next day, once we observed that the ice was frozen enough, we took it out and put it on a small paper plate. I then had Babygirl look at the cube and draw a picture of the ice in the FROZEN state in the first column.

STEM Fun Ice ExperimentWe proceeded to leave the ice cube out for 15-30 minutes or until the cube was partially thawed. Babygirl drew a picture of her second observation in the second column. I engaged her in the whole process talking to her about the changes she saw. I guided her on comparison words: is the cube bigger/smaller? wetter/dryer? Is there more/less water on the plate?

We repeated every 15-30 minutes or until the cube was mostly thawed. STEM fun ice experiment was a hit with Babygirl and the perfect home education opportunity to collect WELLthy MOMents with her while learning about the different stages that water go through from solid to liquids. I live for those fun learning moments with my girls and thank you so much for being part of our WELLthy family journey!
