Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals

Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX NationalsOur family adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals took place June 22 to June 24 at the Trumbull BMX. We could feel the excitement in the air from the time we parked our car. We could see racers practicing excitedly in the lot. It was a joy to see the line of campers with family busy about.

Our family adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals was one family event we couldn’t wait to experience together. The weather looked like it will not cooperate as we felt some rain drops making our way to the track but we were determined not to let that stop us from our BMX race experience.

Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX NationalsWhile it is arguable whether the sport was born in 1969 or the very early 70’s, the one undeniable thing is that BMX Racing all came together in Southern California. It was a particular California gathering of nameless pioneers who were first recorded on film by Bruce Brown’s cameras for the opening credits of his motorcycle film, ON ANY SUNDAY. In July of 1971, those first 4 minutes and 7 seconds of kids catching air and wheelieing forever down the street, would spread the BMX word like a wildfire.

A new sport created by kids for kids was born. At first, they called it Pedal-cross, but eventually they would settle on Bicycle Motocross or BMX for short. Imitation led to innovation and quickly the kids were performing tricks and “getting air” as organized races and tracks began popping up all over. By 1977, pockets of loosely organized BMX races dotted the nation from coast to coast. It was time for a reliable national sanctioning body and from out of this need; the American Bicycle Association (ABA) was created.

Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX NationalsIn 2011, the sport of BMX saw what could perhaps be the biggest change ever: the American Bicycle Association bought the remaining assets of the struggling National Bicycle League (NBL), bringing all of its tracks and members aboard BMX. Now, united under one banner, USA BMX was born.

USA BMX racing is a sport of youthful achievement and the American family. While the young boy or girl BMX racer develops skills at an individual pace, they are learning about winning, losing and trying again. The racer’s family learns that time spent together in support of the racer and the individual achievements is quality time well spent.

Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX NationalsOur Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals found us full of anticipation as we stood at the starting gate waiting along the racers for it to go down. From the moment the gate comes down to the finish line, it’s pure excitement non stop.

We ran into a family we know whose niece was racing that day and we made sure to stick around to show support. Even though their niece didn’t qualify for the next round, it was inspiring for our girls to see her in action and handle her loss with grace.

Our Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX NationalsOur Family Adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals was one for the memory book from the moment that the starting gate slammed down and racers blasted at a full sprint toward the first obstacle. Hubby and I strongly believe in giving our girls experiences over things to expose them to the world around them beyond the screen and books.

BMX racing definitely gives you that rush of adrenaline from big jumps, steep backsides, deep turns, and downhill sections that add up to massive speeds. To realize the total thrill that BMX gives a rider or a spectator, you really need to experience it for yourself and we are so thankful we did!

Now that school is out, my mom camp is in full mode and my WELLthy lifestyle is to make sure we do not break the bank enjoying family fun adventures. I am amazed the affordable fun activities we get to experience when I take the time to look around and our family adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals was one of those experiences. The only fee was parking and it was only $10. Our family adventure to the East Coast BMX Nationals exceeds that $10 and that’s we called WELLthy living!
