Our Impromptu Yummy Story Destination To LL Bean Grand Opening with Ricky D’s Rib Shack is exactly what it sounds because we had no plans to enjoy food from Ricky D’s Rib Shack but we happened to stumble upon it. Those moments are our best memories and we are even more thankful when they are impromptu.
Hubby is taking certification classes at Yale University and the plan was to meet him for lunch around 12:30p. The girls and I decided to head to the Yale University bookstore for our favorite past time of reading to wait for him. We enjoyed exploring the vast selection of books and before we knew it, it was time to meet Hubby for lunch.
Our Impromptu Yummy Story Destination To LL Bean Grand Opening with Ricky D’s Rib Shack started from the time we came downtown to park and the attendant announced the free barbeque we could take part of as part of L.L.Bean New Haven block party celebration in the heart of Yale community. For those who don’t know me, I am a barbeque addict and he had our family at “barbeque”.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Ricky D also lived in Memphis, TN for nine years. After graduating from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA, he relocated to the northeast for a job in “Corporate America”. After working just four years, he realized “Corporate America” was not for him. He wanted to do something he would enjoy every day.
During this time, he hosted cookouts at home and really enjoyed people’s reaction to his food. He noticed there were no original BBQ spots in New Haven so he decided to start his own and Ricky D’s Rib Shack was born. “Don’t Bite Ya Fingers” is his tag line and once we tasted his barbeque, we totally understood why!
All meats are slow smoked with hickory wood and seasoned with his one of a kind custom blend of spices and herbs. All meat is topped with his very own sweet tasting BBQ sauce. Combining the vinegar-based taste of Carolina Style BBQ with the sweet savory taste of Kansas City, Ricky D’s Rib Shack has created Kansa-Lina BBQ. His ribs and brisket are moist and smoked to tender perfection. His BBQ chicken and pulled pork are smoked and full of flavor.
We waited excitedly for our turn in line for our free food, still in disbelief that we were getting free lunch that day. We were each given a take out container with a bun, pulled pork topped with barbecue sauce, cole slaw and corn bread. We served ourselves with some water and drinks and proceeded to enjoy all that free goodness.
Our Impromptu Yummy Story Destination To LL Bean Grand Opening with Ricky D’s Rib Shack is one for the memory book as we enjoyed every bite talking about visiting the shack for some sweet savory ribs. We left with the menu making sure that we come ready because the reasonable priced great selection on the menu will definitely make Ricky D shout at us “Don’t Bite Ya Fingers” but it’s too late!

We truly didn’t need a passport to come to the block party, only an invitation was enough to eat and play. We enjoyed joining you on your grand opening and welcome to New Haven!
